Trastevere and Janiculum Hill
Across the river from the centre of town, the district of Trastevere ( the name means literally “across the Tiber”) was the artisan area of the city in classical times.Outside the city walls, it was for centuries heavily populated by immigrants, and this uniqueness and separation lent the neighbourhood a strong identity that lasted well into this century. Nowdays the area is a long way from its working class roots and although you’ll probably  to hear Trastevere’s strong dialect here, it is a wonderful district  with its charming narrow streets and closeted squares.Come the evening when its many restaurants and clubs are full swing. During the day be sure also to take in the Janicul Hill which has one or two sights, but which also gives wonderful views over the rest of the city.
